Am I covered for delayed and missed flights?

If you miss your connection because of a weather-related event such as a flight cancellation or delay of at least three hours, you may be able to make a claim for transportation to your next destination or additional expenses you’ve incurred.

What does your coverage offer?

If the common carrier, such as the airline, does not provide alternative transportation or other compensation, we may be able to cover:

• An allowance for commercial accommodations (hotels and motels) and meals, essential phone calls and taxi fares up to a $350 CAD per day for a total maximum of $700 CAD
• The lesser of:
a) the change fee charged by the airline carrier when that option is available
b) the cost of a one-way economy airfare via the most cost-effective itinerary to your next destination

How does it work

You must notify us immediately of the delay no later than the next business day.
To make a claim you’ll need:

• A written report from the carrier confirming the reason, timing and duration of the delay and/or reports from police or local authorities documenting the missed connection or travel delay
• Invoices and original receipts from travel service providers
• Original receipts for any new ticket
• Original receipts for the reasonable subsistence expenses you’ve incurred during the delay

By “reasonable,” we mean that any additional expenses should be cost-effective and essential. For example, you can’t book yourself a five-star hotel (and have a bottle of Champagne delivered to your room) and expect travel insurance to pick up the bill.

What may not be covered?

Please note that your plan isn’t designed to cover everything; some things the policy may not cover include:

• If you knew before you booked the trip that there was a possibility it might be interrupted or delayed
• If you refuse alternative flight or transportation from the airline
• If the delay or missed flight was due to circumstances other than inclement weather
• Any delays of less than three hours

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage or if you have questions, just ask us.
