Travel Insurance scenario: I need a hospital or doctor

What does your coverage offer?

World Nomads’ travel insurance plans offer coverage for emergency medical and dental care. Depending on your situation, this may include:

  • Physician care

  • Hospital stays

  • Wheelchairs, splints and braces

  • Prescription medication

  • Ambulance transportation

  • Emergency medical evacuation

If you’re traveling alone, World Nomads may also help fly a bedside companion to be with you (and give an allowance for accommodation and food) if you’re in the hospital for more than three days.

Call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team BEFORE medical treatment

There are a number of reasons why you need to call us before you go into hospital. A couple of big ones are:

  • The team can help organize and recommend reputable doctors, hospitals and facilities in your area

  • You’ll need authorization before undergoing any medical procedures

If due to your medical emergency, there was no time to call prior to seeking medical treatment you (or someone on your behalf) must contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team as soon as possible. If you don't your coverage may be affected. 

What may not be covered?

Remember, travel insurance is made for emergency medical and dental treatment out of your home province and abroad. It’s for unexpected sicknesses and injuries, not routine care.

  • You must be covered by GHIP for the entire duration of the trip, otherwise, your emergency medical benefits are limited to a maximum of $40,000 Canadian.

  • You must not know before the trip of any conditions or illnesses for which you could seek medical treatment or care while on your trip.

  • You need to take all appropriate precautions not to hurt yourself (so, don’t go patting hoop snakes or other dangerous animals!)

  • If you purchase your plan after departing your home province, your coverage doesn’t take effect until after a period of 48 hours from the departure date as shown on your plan.
