Spring break is a time to pause the schoolwork, escape the Canadian winter, get out there and have some fun. Whether you’re a parent taking the family on a spring break vacation, or a college student going overseas for the first time, there are many different types of spring break trips to recharge your batteries.

Whatever you decide to do, considering travel insurance can be an important part of your vacation planning.

Who might want to consider travel insurance for spring break?

World Nomads provides travel insurance for many different types of travelers, including solo travelers, duos living at the same address and families of many different shapes and sizes.

Some types of spring break trips we may be able to offer cover for include:

  • Families taking a road trip to check out national parks, big cities or visit extended family.
  • College students spring breaking in Florida, Mexico or another tropical destination to escape the cold.
  • Friends or families taking a cruise – Caribbean, European or further afield.

What does travel insurance for spring break cover?

Spring Break only happens once a year, and you don’t want illness or injury to ruin your plans. If you do get sick or seriously injured, especially overseas, emergency medical expenses and repatriation can climb into the tens of thousands of dollars.

All our policies include cover for:

Note, you will need to be covered by your province’s GHIP in order to be eligible for full emergency medical benefits as defined in your policy.

What activities are covered by travel insurance for spring break?

World Nomads covers more than 150 activities, sports, work and volunteer experiences. Your spring break fun in the sun might include water sports like snorkeling, surfing, swimming and sailing – we’ve got you covered for all of these. And if your spring break plans include more adventurous activities, like skiing, scuba diving, and even bungee jumping, these activities may be covered too.

All activities come with inherent risks, and accidents can happen. Travel insurance can provide coverage for emergency medical treatment and emergency evacuation if necessary. This is especially important if you are traveling to a remote location or a country with limited medical facilities.

Be sure to list all of the activities you plan to participate in when you buy your policy, to ensure you’re covered. If an activity you plan to pursue is not listed, please contact us.

Which plan is right for me?

World Nomads offers two plans, a Standard and an Explorer plan. Both plans offer a range of benefits including overseas emergency medical coverage, cover for your belongings, and cover for more than 150 activities. The Explorer Plan includes all the benefits of the Standard Plan, plus a few more, including higher limits and sub-limits of coverage. To see what’s covered, select your country of residence and get a quote. You’ll be able to compare plans and download the full policy wording before you buy.

What's not covered?

All travel insurance has exclusions, so make sure you read your policy and know what you aren’t covered for. Common things we won’t cover include:

  • Anything illegal (you didn’t really think we’d cover that did you?).
  • Medical bills related to or caused by drugs or alcohol.
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (it's not health insurance; it's for travel emergencies).
  • Certain pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Ongoing treatment at home.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms and conditions of the policy. It is important you read and understand your policy as it contains benefits, conditions, exclusions and pre-existing condition exclusions. If you do not understand your coverage, or if you have questions, just ask us.

Altitude Sickness in Peru

I was on a full-day tour to Chacaltaya and Valle de la luna. Later that night, I was unable to sleep I started to get dizzy, had difficulty breathing and strong pains in my chest. The next morning I contacted World Nomads emergency assistance and was directed to Clinica del Sur from La Paz, where I stayed 24 hours under medical surveillance for altitude sickness. After being discharged from the hospital, I continued on my next tour. Yet suddenl,y I felt a strong pain in my chest and got a headache, so I returned to the medical clinic for an hour of oxygen treatment. The next morning I flew back to Lima, which was safely at sea level.
